Bio Security

PEI is in a unique position in that it is geographically isolated from other large pig producing areas. PEI's recent Swine Import Regulations prohibit the entry of swine and semen unless it tests negative for certain diseases.

Creating and maintaining a production network free of primary diseases and their associated economic impact has guided IGP's efforts since its very foundation. The rigorous application of strict biosecurity measures constitutes a fundamental priority. IGP's team has developed a biosecurity “reflex” that has become second nature.

The upholding and improvement of current biosecurity measures involves:

  • development of new biosecurity protocols;
  • transmission of relevant knowledge and methods to customers through training and technical support to minimize the risk of external contamination.

Biosecurity: Added value for producers

Buying breeding stock with exceptional health status:
  • facilitates the animal quarantine process
  • prevents the introduction of new pathogens
  • prevents the introduction of new strains of an existing pathogen into the herd
Maintaining a herd's exceptional health status:
  • enhances feed conversion ability and growth rates
  • reduces expenses for medication and care
  • streamlines work processes and decreases task time
  • increases percentage of marketed pigs

"The Canadian pork industry is an important part of Canadian agriculture. It produces over 16 million hogs each year. The DNA test for the halothane gene for PSS and PSE was developed in Canada and is now used worldwide because of the importance of meat quality. Canadian breeders have taken a proactive approach and eliminated the PSS gene from its population. Lean quality swine genetics is the corner stone of our lean quality pork. Canadian breeders have been breeding lean genetics for many years and the world is following our leading role. "

"Other countries have used the Pietran breed with its PSS gene as a quick fix for lean genetics, but Canada has been breeding lean genetics for many years. Genetic testing and selection for the Canadian Improved Pig offers quality to the world consumer that is second to none.The success of the Canadian industry, especially in export markets, owes much to the advances made in Canadian genetic improvement and to high health standards in the breeding sector. "

It stands to reason that in order to get lean healthy meat, you must start with lean healthy genetics.
